Getting To Know You - A new way to make friends, learn Spanish and make life a little less complicated...
Getting To Know You was started by Juliette Robb from Coin, in order that members can meet like minded people and to have company to go places without being on their own.
However as time has gone by, with some members having fallen by the wayside, the hard core members have developed into more of a Support Group.
The group meets each week on a Friday at 2.30pm at Aguamania on the road between Coin and Alhaurin.
There is a newsletter each week giving information, deadlines for bills etc., For sale/Wanted items, Items of Interest, details of relevant health issues and the 'system' and any meetings or outings planned for the month. There is a book and magazine exchange, helpful tips and everyone has a laugh trying to learn very basic Spanish but no one is under any pressure. The group has a raffle every week for fun and if anyone wants to go along, join in and not be sitting at home on their own, just come along and join in.
Aguamania Bar & Restaurant where the meetings take
Juliette also started started the T.T.T. list which is a Tried,Tested and Trusted list of competent and fair tradesmen and only after a member has tried, tested and trusted, do they go on to the list. There is now a good compliment of trusted people who the group uses between them and recommend to their friends, covering practically all trades and services:
Plumbing, Building, Electrical, Metalwork, Painters, Plasterers, Translators, Carers Therapists, and we have started to collate medical items in case any of the group require help.
The group has got a very basic wheelchair that has already come in useful.
If someone is on their own then other members of the group make sure they have contact numbers and in the event of illness they can split tasks between them like getting shopping etc. Little things that mean big things.
To join the group costs 10Euros and to renew each year costs 6Euros. Juliette says they are only a small group but a very effective group. When anyone needs help they group together and go help. Simple and effective. Their translator can go with members to the doctors, hospitals, make phone calls etc. If someone has a problem, the group sources out ways or options to help and if the members don’t know, they will find out.
In the past they have covered important items like wills, funerals etc., which have to be addressed whether we like or not, and have had speakers, such as Moneycorp etc., along to their little group on a Friday. As a group they get discounts on bedding, therapies etc.,
There are spin offs from the group and they currently run a little painting/craft group, mostly at Juliette’s house in Coin, or if someone cant come due to one reason or another, they will meet at their house so they dont miss it. You can just sit and paint, or natter, or do what you fancy. It has given great pleasure to those who come.
That's basically what Getting To Know You is about and new members are always welcome especially if they like to help people and enjoy company.

At the end of each month we go out to a different restaurant either at night time or for a lunch time but its purely for a social time together.
We plan BBQ's and go on outings, nominating drivers to cover the amount of people and we pay the driver up front before we go to cover for petrol so no one is out of pocket.
